Design Forward 2017 is less than 2 weeks away. The first semi-finalist feature of this week is on Montreal based Noémiah.
1. What is your design inspiration?
My inspiration is different for each collection. What I think really gets my creativity flowing is the search for a perfect balance between minimal, clean cuts and feminine and playful touch. My friend, the illustrator Paule T.B, is behind most of our illustrations that are printed or embroidered. When I am designing a new collection, we create a few drafts very early on. Creating co-designed fabrics is one of my favourite parts. The possibilities are endless, and I’m proud the line can be that personal. From there, I start sketching and sampling, never forgetting the general art direction I want for the collection. To stay focused, I do a collage of images and fabric swatches that inspire me.
2. What is your favourite piece from your collection? Why?
I have a printed dress version of SS17 Nina top, coming for Fall. It has very large bell sleeves and the cut is just so pretty.
3. What is your morning routine?
Fruits, oats, coffee, emails and order production.
4. What makes your collection sustainable?
I try to be environmentally conscious throughout my design and production. I use organic and eco-friendly fabrics when possible and produce quality-made garments, that are not mass produced. All of my printed fabrics are made in a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified facility and are Azo free. Garments are entirely produced locally in Montreal, Canada.
