The True Cost of Fashion is an ‘in class field trip’ that will take students on a journey beyond their closet to the fields, mills and factories where our clothes are made. Using real world issues, students will learn about the impacts of fashion on both society and the environment, and they will end the day with a repurposing project.
During this full day workshop, we pull back the curtain and explore behind the scenes of the fashion industry. Students learn about the life cycle of our clothes, and the many negative impacts at each stage – from the field to the factory, from our purchasing behaviour to end of life. They learn about the fashion industry’s use of highly toxic chemicals, water usage and pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, textile waste and recycling, and the circular economy of fashion.
By the end of the day, students can turn their new knowledge into practical changes to reduce their fashion footprint.
