How to Host a Clothing Swap
A clothing swap is a fun, sustainable way to refresh your wardrobe while keeping textiles out of landfills. Whether it’s a community event, workplace initiative, or fundraiser, here’s everything you need to know to make it a success.
Why Host a Clothing Swap?
Save money – Refresh your wardrobe for free!

Step-By-Step Guide:
Step 1
Set the Guidelines
Decide on Item Limits – Set a maximum number of items per person (optional).
Stick to Wearable Clothing – Shoes, hats, and scarves are okay too!
Use a Ticket System – Each item contributed earns 1 ticket, which can be used as swap currency. No perceived value differences—every item is equal.
Step 2
Plan & Prepare
Arrange a Donation Partner – Contact a local charity or shelter in advance to donate leftover items. Some organizations also recycle damaged textiles into rags or insulation.
Recruit Volunteers – The more hands on deck, the smoother the swap! Get friends, family, or community members involved.
Collect Items in Advance – If possible, ask participants to drop off clothes ahead of time for sorting.
Inspect for Quality – Remove any items with stains, rips, or excessive wear. If possible, set aside damaged items for repurposing or textile recycling.
Spread the Word – Use social media, newsletters, and posters to promote the event.
Step 3
Set Up the Swap
Organize Clothing by Type & Size – Separate items into categories like shirts, pants, dresses, jackets, and shoes to make browsing easy. If you have a large selection, consider sorting by size.
Use Tables or Racks – Clothing racks are ideal, but tables work just as well.
Provide Mirrors – Not required, but helpful for participants.
Offer a Fitting Area – If space allows, set up a small try-on section.
Step 4
Run the Event
Assign Volunteers to Key Roles
Sorters – Check incoming items for quality and handle last-minute donations.
Trackers – Record the number of participants and items swapped to measure impact (e.g., "We swapped 500 garments and kept them out of landfills!").
Runners – Keep the swap area tidy and stocked.
Floating Helpers – Assist participants and answer questions.
Step 5
Add an Educational or Fundraising Element
Promote Sustainable Fashion:
Set up an info table about the environmental and social impact of fast fashion.
Provide materials about a fashion-focused non-profit, campaign, or initiative.
Encourage participants to sign a "7R’s of Fashion" pledge on a tablet.
Make It a Fundraiser:
Ask for donations at the door.
Sell baked goods or refreshments to raise funds.
Donate proceeds to a cause of your choice, or support Fashion Takes Action’s youth education programs.
