Katrusia Balan

Stakeholder Engagement Lead, Stakeholder & Community Outreach

- Solid Waste Management Services, City of Toronto

As a child of the ‘80s who grew up with the 3Rs mantra, Katrusia is passionate about waste reduction and reuse. Katrusia has had the privilege of working for the City of Toronto’s Solid Waste Management Services for over 10 years, including the last few as part of its Stakeholder & Community Outreach team. With a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Education, both from the University of Toronto, Katrusia educates people of all ages and backgrounds about waste management. She enjoys the challenge of communicating complex issues in a clear and understandable manner, while encouraging behaviour change at every opportunity.

Katrusia has overseen a variety of projects during her time with the City, including textile reduction and diversion from landfill, food waste reduction, waste composition audits, educational resources, the Waste Reduction Community Grants pilot program and a waste diversion pilot project in Toronto Community Housing buildings. She has also supported public and stakeholder consultations, as well as planned many public events, such as Zero Waste Conferences and Waste Reduction Weeks, including a clothing swap on Nathan Phillips Square. Outside of work, Katrusia loves exploring the outdoors on two feet or two wheels, practising yoga, hosting clothing swaps and thinking of creative ways to reuse or repurpose things.
