The Better Cotton Initiative is the largest cotton sustainability program globally, with over 2,500 members and almost a quarter of the world’s cotton is produced under the Better Cotton Standard. The Better Cotton Standard System covers all three sustainability pillars (environmental, social and economical) and trains farmers in sustainable practices. The system has 7 principles and criteria, regular farm assessments, and monitoring mechanisms to measure progress. Recently, the program revised its principles and criteria to align with their 2030 strategy and will become effective for licensing in the 2024/25 season. Better Cotton establishes its standards in compliance with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice on Standard Setting. ISEAL acts as the overseer of certifiers, ensuring that their certification scheme is trustworthy and effective.
